Since there will be contextual information display, how about contextual music? When there isn't any fighting going on the current background music can be used but when you are in proximity to fighting the music could changes to a combat score. If there are no weapons being fired but an enemy is just a screen length or so from being in your field of vision, then the music can be tense. That would require three scores in total; calm, tense, exciting. The transitions would need to be smooth and the exciting music's transition would need to be immediate so it can coincide with the first instance of weapons fire on screen. That can be aided by working in elements of the exciting piece into the tense piece.

Most of that would have to do with measuring proximity, action flags, and timing of fading in and out of different pieces of music. Would the programming for that be complicated?
